Insider: Newcastle United star Callum Wilson receiving special treatment after training ground reveal
Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is receiving necessary special treatment while away with England at the World Cup.
That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
Wilson marked his tournament debut with an assist after he came off the bench in the 76th minute of England’s 6-2 win over Iran on Monday (21 November).
As per England’s Twitter account on Tuesday (22 November), the 30-year-old was not involved in the outdoor training session that day.
He joined the 11 starters against Iran indoors as they underwent rehabilitation work while James Maddison was also missing from the main group.
“It’s just about tailoring recovery strategies around individual players given what they have been managing in recent times,” Dinnery told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“We know that Callum Wilson is not long back from that muscle problem and he had a positive covid test after he was forced off against Southampton at St. Mary’s.
“He is playing catch up still in terms of sharpness and fitness. Then that illness didn’t hold him back, but maybe didn’t allow him to progress through and get to a point where he needed to be.
“Then you’ve got the acclimatisation to the new conditions and environment out in Qatar.

“Again, this is just a way of managing Callum Wilson through those post-match recovery strategies. It’s nothing to be overly concerned about.
“You’ve always got to err on the side of caution and make sure you are doing the best you can to mitigate any risk down the line.”
