Prolific £6.5m-rated Ligue 1 striker sends Twitter message to Leeds
By Alex Stevens
France-based striker Martin Braithwaite has displayed an impressive knowledge of Leeds in a Twitter post to the club.
The prolific goalscorer, who plays for Ligue 1 side Toulouse as well as the Denmark national team, sent a message to the official Twitter account of the Championship club after spotting a peacock in his garden on Wednesday.
Displaying his knowledge of Leeds’ history, Braithwaite, 25, made a tongue-in-cheek reference to the club’s old nickname, the Peacocks.
“Check out my new house guest, gave you got something to do with this Leeds,” the forward asked the club.
Leeds are now known as simply ‘United’ or ‘Whites’, after their present colours, but the club’s previous nickname of the ‘Peacocks’, stemming from the public house that once stood opposite Elland Road, was commonly used a generation or two ago.
Braithwaite’s interest in Leeds comes at a time when the club are in the market to sign a new striker to relieve some of the burden on the Championship’s top scorer Chris Wood.
The Dane has been in fine form for 11th-placed Toulouse this season, scoring 11 goals in 27 matches, including an impressive 10 league goals.
The Toulouse club captain has also accumulated 14 international caps, which have yielded a single goal to date.
Braithwaite joined the French side for £1.7million from Esbjerg in 2013 and, according to Transfermarkt, his current market value is £6.4million.
