‘Not what we want’ – Rangers star reveals what would change at Ibrox with win over Celtic
Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick believes a win over Celtic in next weekend’s Old Firm clash could “lift things” at Ibrox after the disappointment of this season as they failed to lift a trophy and have struggled to secure second in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers travel to face Celtic next weekend in the final Old Firm clash of the season and the Light Blues keeper admits the Light Blues aren’t looking at the possibility of the Hoops securing the title next Sunday.
The former Port Vale number one confessed the Gers haven’t hit their targets this season but insists a win at Celtic Park could give the Gers a lift going into next season.
“We know our aim at the start of the season wasn’t to finish second,” Alnwick said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“We wanted to win a cup as well but you’ve got to look at the whole season and if we were to win on Sunday then it could lift things going into the end of the season as well as next season
“We’re not looking at things like Celtic winning titles or stuff like that.
“We have gone close against them a couple of times this season, it’s not what we want as we want to beat them.”
Alnwick was a surprise starter in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Hearts at Ibrox after a shoulder injury ruled Wes Foderingham out.
The Gers number one could miss the trip the Celtic Park, meaning a possible rare Old Firm appearance for Alnwick next weekend.
Football Insider verdict:
A win over Celtic would be a nice confidence boost for the Light Blues and help lift the psychological hurdle that seems to be in their way right now. The Gers have fallen way short this season and taking three points at Celtic Park would be a nice lift for fans – as well as delaying Celtic’s title party – and will give the Ibrox side something to build on moving forward. Alnwick could be in line for a start at Celtic Park and will need to be at his very best if the Light Blues are to have any chance of taking three points.
