Jack Simpson: Rangers outcast tipped to seal Championship club move after talks held – McLeish

Alex McLeish has tipped Jack Simpson to leave Rangers for an English club this summer amid interest from Birmingham City.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old needs to leave Ibrox for the good of his career.

A Rangers source told Football Insider last week (5 March) the centre-back has told his agent to find him a move after holding crunch talks with the Light Blues over his future.

This site revealed on Thursday (10 March) that Birmingham are plotting a potential move for Simpson this summer.

McLeish admitted the defender was a “strange” signing for Rangers back in February 2021 and suggested someone who “knows him” in England could sign him this summer.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I felt when Jack came at the age of 24, he didn’t have many senior appearances when he was at Bournemouth.

“I found it quite a strange acquisition. He’s come in and virtually played two or three games. So for me it was a strange acquisition in the first place.

“Jack has to go away and get himself as much playing time as he can. He’s 25 now and he needs to find a team who can provide him with game time every single week.

“I guess it will be down to who knows him in the game. I’m sure that in England teams will be aware of him but at what level? Would it be Championship level? He’s still yet to prove himself at the senior level.

“His pedigree, it can look good on your CV, Bournemouth and Rangers. I would think if he wants to look back on his football career, he’s got to get playing again.”

Both Birmingham and Middlesbrough made contact with Rangers over a deal for the defender during the January transfer window.

Simpson has played just 13 times across all competitions for the Gers to date.
