Jamaal Lascelles delivers Twitter verdict after Newcastle win v Aston Villa

By Dominic Toner

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles believes that his side overcame “tough opposition” in the victory over Aston Villa on Monday night.

The 23-year-old expressed his delight on Twitter after the game as the Magpies leapfrogged Brighton to return to the top of the Championship table.

Rafael Benitez’s side recorded a 2-0 home win against Villa in the league and Yoan Gouffran scored a first-half goal, before Henri Lansbury netted an own goal.

They are now unbeaten in their last seven league matches and are eight points above third-placed Huddersfield, meaning that automatic promotion remains a real possibility.

Lascelles expressed his delight after the win and feels they did well against Steve Bruce’s side, who are in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

“The boys put in a shift tonight. Great result against a tough opposition. Fans superb as always,” Lascelles wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Lascelles completed 90 minutes in the Villa win and has been an important member of the club’s success this season.

The centre-back is the leader of the side and one of Benitez’s most consistent performers, with the manager handing him the armband to reflect his role.

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the division and Lascelles is a big factor that they have conceded just 25 league goals in 32 games.

They will now turn their attention to Bristol City on Saturday, before a huge match against second-placed Brighton on Tuesday.
