James Tavernier to make Rangers exit decision after update on contract talks
James Tavernier is set to hold talks over his Rangers future ahead of the January transfer window and is expected to make a decision amid interest from elsewhere.
Tavernier could have left Rangers during the summer amid speculation linking the Rangers man with moves to Turkey or Saudi Arabia, but he opted to remain at Ibrox.
However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the club captain is weighing up his long-term future in Glasgow with potential new challenges on the horizon should he let his contract run down.
As things stand, Tavernier could quit Rangers for free in the summer of 2026 and he is likely to have suitors across Europe should he decide to walk away.
Despite the interest from elsewhere, it remains possible the right-back could extend his deal with a view to finishing his career at Rangers given his age.
James Tavernier to make Rangers exit decision
Football Insider revealed in April that Rangers were open to offers for Tavernier in a bid to raise funds as he entered the final year of his contract at Ibrox.
While that is unlikely to be the case in January given his importance to Danny Rohl’s side, there remains a possibility that they could part ways at the end of the season.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “He still has a lot to offer for Rangers, as you said, still club captain at Ibrox as well.
“He’s not getting any younger, there’s no getting away from that, but it seems every transfer window we have talked, maybe Tavernier could move on, but he always remains at Rangers.
“I’m sure there’ll be clubs who’ll be looking at Tavernier’s contract situation hoping that they could prize him away. A lot will depend on Tavernier and what he wants to do.
“Does he see himself staying at Rangers for the rest of his career or does he fancy a new challenge elsewhere?

“I think it’ll be the player who will go a long way to deciding his own future plans.
“I’m sure Rangers would like to keep him and talks will be held over extending that association with the Rangers but again I’m sure the players will have options elsewhere as well.”
Danny Rohl’s January transfer plans revealed
Tavernier’s contract talks are seen as an important step for Rangers, but they must also set their sights on the January window to bolster Rohl’s squad.
Football Insider revealed on 28 October that Rangers want three new players in January, with a new striker, left-back and midfielder on their list.
Rohl would like to strengthen his squad after replacing Russell Martin, and his strong start to life at Ibrox has shown he deserves that backing.

However, Football Insider revealed that Rangers could struggle to back Rohl due to their heavy spending under Martin during the summer window.
They Glasgow club have struggled financially in recent seasons, and their £26million summer spend has heavily restricted what they can do in January.
