Jhon Duran: ‘Highly lucrative’ deal is available to Aston Villa – CEO

Aston Villa could miss out on new revenue streams in the US market if they sell Jhon Duran before the transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

The CLV Group CEO Neil Joyce exclusively revealed to Football Insider the Colombia international opens up a “highly lucrative” growth area within the Latino market and Hispanic communities in the US that Villa could tap into.

Duran joined the Premier League side in an £18million move from Chicago Fire in January 2023, having made himself known to American audiences following his impressive performances in the MLS.

Despite helping Unai Emery’s side reach the Champions League last season, the 20-year-old has been pushing for a move away from Villa Park this summer due to a lack of starts.

Duran has attracted bids from Chelsea and West Ham in recent weeks and has been close to joining both clubs at various stages.

Football Insider revealed on 5 August Villa remain open to offers for the wantaway striker ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline after placing a £40million asking price on his head.

But Joyce told Football Insider it could be worthwhile hanging onto Duran from a business perspective due to the monetary opportunities he creates.

Aston Villa could leapfrog Tottenham in US market

Villa’s qualification for the Champions League ensures they will be much more visible to American audiences once the group stage starts in September than they ever have been before.

Since qualifying for European football’s premier competition in 2017, Tottenham have seen their US fanbase grow considerably in recent years, having recorded a 15 per cent year-on-year increase in that department.

But Joyce told Football Insider Villa can now leapfrog Spurs in the US market following their recent on-field success.

The CLV Group estimates there to be up to £860million on offer to European clubs in additional revenue ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the US, Canada and Mexico.

It comes at a time when Villa are looking to source new income streams, with the club’s president of business Chris Heck revealing they are hoping to increase their revenue to £400million by 2027.

The Premier League side generated £217million of revenue in their latest 2022-23 accounts, but they reported a £119.6million loss across the year after their wage bill soared to £194million.
