John Hartson posts Twitter verdict on two-year spell with West Ham

John Hartson has described West Ham as a “great club” after signing for the club 19 years ago on February 14.

Hartson, 41, spent two years with the Hammers between 1997 and 1999 after joining the club on Valentine’s Day from Arsenal for a fee of £4million.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, former striker Hartson revealed it was a “shame” that his stay in east London was so short, describing his spell as a “brilliant two years”.

The 51-time Wales international, who is known more for his time with 47-time Scottish champions Celtic, enjoyed a prolific spell during his time in east London.

Making 73 league and cup appearances in claret and blue, Hartson scored 33 times in all competitions before leaving to join Wimbledon for £7.5million.

Spending five years with Celtic, Hartson picked up three league winners’ medals, after scoring 109 goals in 201 games for the Hoops before ending his career back down south.

Two years with West Brom, separated by a short loan spell with Norwich, saw Hartson end his career aged just 33.

Now a renowned television pundit, Hartson is respected among the terraces at the London Stadium following his brief, yet prolific spell with the Hammers which saw him top their goalscoring charts in 1997-98 with 24 strikes in all competitions.
