Jonathan David ‘will leave’ – Newcastle’s stance after ‘cheeky bids’ tabled

Jonathan David is expected to leave Lille in the summer amid interest from Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that it is “pretty inevitable” that the in-demand forward will leave the Ligue 1 side in the summer transfer window.

However, the French outfit are unlikely to allow David to leave January transfer window as they will look to keep him as part of the squad.

There have been some “cheeky bids” tabled for the 25-year-old during the January transfer window, but well-placed sources have revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle isn’t the club behind them.

Instead, it is believed those bis have been coming from elsewhere in Europe during this transfer window.

David has scored 19 goals and provided seve assists in 32 performances this season as interest in him has grown across Europe.

Newcastle will have to fight off competition for Jonathan David

The Magpies will face competition in trying to sign the Canada international as he has enhanced his reputation following his recent goal against Liverpool in the Champions League.

David will become a free agent at the end of this season, which will lead to a lot of different teams attempting to secure his services.

However, it is believed that Champions League football will be important for any team looking to sign David in the summer.

Newcastle United

The striker wants to continue playing in that competition moving forward, which means the second half of the campaign will need to be a strong one for Newcastle.
