Jorge Mendes could now scupper Wolves takeover – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested the influence of Jorge Mendes could scupper a potential takeover at Wolves.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Portuguese super-agent has “exerted a lot of control over decisions” at Molineux, despite the club claiming otherwise.
According to The Sun (13 June), New York-based Moelis & Company have been hired to sell a stake in Wolves to raise funds to improve the squad while avoiding financial problems.
Wyness told Football Insider on Wednesday (19 June) that Chinese owners Fosun may sell the club in a “gradual process” across several years.
Mendes became involved with Wolves in 2016 and has played a key role in the signing of 20 Portuguese players at Molineux.
Wolves investors must be wary of Mendes influence, says Wyness
Wyness claimed investors will have to be careful – but admitted the chance to buy into a Premier League club will still be attractive.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The issue with any minority owner coming into Wolves is the influence of Jorge Mendes.
“He’s exerted a lot of control over decisions at Wolves.
“They’ve always said he doesn’t have a major role, but the evidence – I’m afraid – points to the contrary.
“People have got to consider what they’re coming into, and every club has a unique situation.
“Wolves, with Mendes and the Chinese ownership, is a very unique situation.

“They’ve got to be careful – but I think the Premier League status is still very attractive for investors.
“It’s going to be an interesting one to watch. They’re are a good club and they’ve been run well.”
