Jose Sa ‘lucky’ as Wolves controversy analysed by expert
Paul Robinson is adamant Leeds United should have been awarded a penalty against Wolves on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Wanderers goalkeeper Jose Sa should have been penalised for “a very clumsy” challenge on Rasmus Kristensen.
Sa collided with Kristensen in mid-air after mistiming a punch from a first-half set piece.
Referee Robert Jones decided not to point to the spot, much to the dismay of the Leeds dugout, and VAR official Jarred Gillett opted against intervening.
The decision would ultimately not count for much as Jesse March’s side went on to win 2-1 at Elland Road.
As quoted by Leeds Live (6 August), Marsch slammed the referee’s decision in his post-match press conference.
He said the incident would have definitely been deemed a foul if the roles were reversed.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the controversial incident, Robinson said: “It should have been a penalty.
“VAR obviously did not deem it to be a clear and obvious error. I’m not sure why because it was not a great challenge.
“It was very clumsy from Sa. I don’t think there was any intent. It was just clumsy. Wolves got lucky.
“The goalkeeper had a bad day. He should never have let the goal go in at his near post. Maybe the referee felt a bit sorry for him!”
