Kalvin Phillips told to sign for Newcastle after source’s reveal – pundit

Kalvin Phillips will snub a move to Aston Villa to sign for Newcastle United this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

On Monday (16 May) this site revealed Aston Villa and Newcastle are leading the race to sign Phillips, 26, this summer.

A recruitment source has told this site both clubs have made the midfielder a top target and are laying the groundwork for potential deals.

Kenny insists Phillips will leave Leeds even if they stay up and claims Newcastle is the better option.

“Well just look at the project at Newcastle,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“At Villa, they have money and they made a lot of signings last season but it hasn’t really worked out for them.

“Newcastle are flying at the moment. They are winning most weeks and there is something special happening there.

“I think any player would like to be a part of that. Just look at the scenes at St James’ Park on Monday, that’s attractive to anyone.

“For me, it has to be Newcastle. They can offer higher wages as well so there is that.

“I just think you look at Newcastle now and you want to go there.”

The 26-year-old was pictured still out on the Elland Road turf with Raphinha long after the final whistle in Sunday’s (15 May) 1-1 draw with Brighton by BBC Leeds’ Jonathan Buchan.

The reporter also suggested Phillips may have been taking in the surroundings at Elland Road for the final time as a Leeds player.
