Keith Wyness seriously impressed by what he’s seen from Danny Rohl at Rangers

Rangers’ appointment of Danny Rohl looks to be paying dividends amid high praise for the German manager.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Rohl has shown some impressive traits already as Rangers boss.

Rangers’ 2-0 win over Aberdeen keeps the Glasgow side in the title race, with Rohl having lost just one Scottish Premiership game in charge of the club.

The 36-year-old joined from Sheffield Wednesday back in October, with Rangers seemingly out of title contention following the disastrous reign of Russell Martin.

Danny Rohl praised as a ‘proper manager’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rohl is working well with the resources he has available at Rangers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Rohl’s tactics have proved the difference in tight games.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We talked about managers and owners wanting to influence formations and style of play. And I’ll come back to Danny Rohl in a second, but again, I mean, even Jim Ratcliffe has said that there’s going to be a certain style of play, and they will hire the coaches that they want to actually execute that style of play.

“Danny Rohl has proven that he’s been much more flexible and pragmatic to win those games. That’s the difference. And hats off to him. He’s actually changed tactics and formations during games and then changed again.

“And so, I think that’s exactly what is needed with modern day football is the ability to be in a battle of wits with the opposing manager with the resources you have, not just impose a certain theory you have from a chalkboard that you’ve been working on in the classroom. So that’s the difference.

“I think Danny Rohl has shown glimmers of hope. It’s shown to me that he is a manager, a proper manager, that can actually handle things properly rather than try and follow, be a disciple of a certain style of play. And that’s a big difference these days. Now, that’s what I would want if I’m going to be looking to go forward.”

Rohl set to offload unwanted Rangers star

Rohl is set to begin a rebuild of the Rangers squad in the January transfer window, with incomings and outgoings expected.

Joe Rothwell could leave Rangers after joining the club in the summer to link back up with Martin, whom he worked under at Southampton.

Sheffield United lead the race for the 31-year-old, who has only featured twice under Rohl since he became manager.
