Keown: This was the turning point for Kane at Tottenham
By Derek Smithson
Martin Keown has stated that Tottenham striker Harry Kane went from “strength to stength” after his performance against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League back in 2014.
The 24-year-old delivered a stunning display on Wednesday night as Spurs beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the Champions League group stages.
The England international has become one of the best centre-forwards in world football during recent years and is a key player in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Arsenal legend Keown has gone back all the way to October 2014 and highlighted that as the moment Kane really stepped up a level.
The forward scored a hat-trick in the Europa League group stages against Greek side Asteras and that same season he scored 31 goals across all competitions.
“They [strikers] are on the pitch to score goals and, at the moment, Kane is living and breathing goals,” Keown told the Mail. “No one can match his power and accuracy when shooting, and he always seems to find the corners.
“He announced himself on the European stage three seasons ago with a hat-trick against Asteras Tripolis, and suddenly all those questions he would have had about himself – am I quick enough, am I brave enough, am I good enough? – would have been answered. He has gone from strength to strength since then.”
Kane is hopeful to prove himself this season in Europe’s elite club competition and made a great start against Dortmund, but he could lay down a real market if he performs against another group opponent Real Madrid.
The forward made a slow start to the new campaign as his league drought for the month of August continued for another year, but he has scored four times during two games in September.
He will now turn his attention to Swansea on Saturday and he scored twice against them last season.
In other Tottenham news, the club’s supporters were highly critical of their midfielder after his performance against Dortmund.
