Kieran Maguire: Glazers change Man United takeover stance after £1bn news – ‘crumbling apart’

The Glazers are now angling towards a full sale at Man United as they don’t want to pay the £1billion to renovate Old Trafford.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the Glazers’ change of heart towards a full sale.

According to Ben Jacobs, the Glazers are ‘leaning towards’ a full sale of Man United despite initially considering minority investment.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim remain the two frontrunners to complete a majority takeover of the Red Devils, with a third round of bidding ordered by the Glazers.

Renovations to Old Trafford will be essential for new owners after the venue missed out on the 2028 Euro bid, and the Daily Mail revealed that the Manchester club have been presented with plans for a new £2bn stadium project or £1bn refurbishment plans.

Maguire believes the Glazers will not want to dip into their own pockets to renovate Old Trafford and that’s why they have changed their takeover stance.

“The Glazers do have independent thought, and it seems it was only Joel and Avram who were particularly keen to hold on to their ownership of Man United,” Maguire told Football Insider.

I think they realise that even if they had converted the shares of the other siblings into one, the elephant in the room is that we’ve seen through the Eufa 2028 Euro bid that the Glazers’ Old Trafford is crumbling apart.

The lack of infrastructure investment means that whoever does complete a takeover has to find substantial funding for the stadium.

The Glazers won’t want to reach into their own pocket to do that and perhaps that is why they now prefer a full sale.”
