‘Kieran Trippier makes last-gasp Newcastle transfer decision’ after talks

Kieran Trippier has decided to see out the season at Newcastle United despite late attempts from Galatasaray to convince him of the move.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 34-year-old believes he still has a role to play at St James’ Park.

Trippier’s current contract is set to run until 2026, but there is a growing feeling that this could be his final season at the club after constant transfer speculation.

The Turkish Super Lig transfer window is set to close on 11 February, and league-leaders Galatasaray had eyed Trippier as an option to strengthen their starting XI.

This came as part of their ambitious transfer plans, following the signings of the likes of Victor Osimhen, Hakim Ziyech, Mario Lemina, Alvaro Morata and Grabriel Sara.

However, the right-back has decided in favour of remaining in England, where he aims to help Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup and continue their Premier League progress.

Kieran Trippier makes up his mind on leaving Newcastle after late twist

Brown told Football Insider in December that Newcastle were prepared to accept offers for Trippier in the mid-season window in an attempt to cut their wage bill.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that a deal is unlikely to take place before the Turkish window closes.

From what I hear, he wants to see the season out with Newcastle,” he told Football Insider.

“If he wanted to leave, he’d be entitled to go to Newcastle and say look, if an offer comes then I’d like to go.

“Because he’s been a top player for them and he’s helped them a lot during his spell.

“But at this point, I think he’d prefer to get to the end of the season and then see what offers come.

“They’re in a cup final and they’re playing well in the Premier League, so he’ll want to be a part of that squad and hopefully help them lift some silverware.

“I have no doubt Galatasaray would’ve spoken to him or his representatives to put their plan forward, but I would be surprised if he left at this stage.

“From a Newcastle point of view as well, why would they want to let him go when they can’t go and get a replacement? The timing is wrong.

Fabian Schar exit decision emerges after new contract twist

Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Trippier’s future, Newcastle are keen to ensure other key members of Eddie Howe’s squad remain at the club beyond this season.

One of those is Fabian Schar, who remains a key part of Howe’s side, amid speculation about whether he would be offered a new deal.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 10 February that preliminary discussions have taken place about the offer of a new contract for the 33-year-old.

As things stand, the centre-back’s deal is set to expire at the end of the season, but Newcastle are keen to tie down his long-term future to the club.
