'Who knows' – Rangers loanee makes admission about potential permanent deal
New Rangers signing Russell Martin won’t rule out making his loan switch a long-term move – and pointed to former Gers captain David Weir who signed for the Gers aged 36 and stayed for five years.
Martin joined the Gers on a season-long loan deal after falling out of favour at Norwich and is looking forward to the prospect of regular games.
The 32-year-old is under contract with Norwich until 2019 but after being allowed to leave on loan it doesn’t look as though the Scotland international has any future at Carrow Road.
The former Norwich captain admitted that you can “never know” what will happen in the future but he is concentrating on the short-term.
“Who knows what will happen beyond the loan?” Martin said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun
“I’m a Norwich City player on loan here but I spoke to someone the other day who said Davie Weir signed for Rangers at 36 and ended up staying for five years.
“You never know what can happen. I’m fully concentrating on this next three or four months.
“I’ll be giving my everything for Rangers and coming here to enjoy it because I’m excited by it.”
Martin joined Norwich in 2009 from Peterborough United and has made over 300 appearances for the Canaries – including 125 in the Premier League.
The 32-year-old has also won 29 caps for Scotland but hasn’t featured for the national team since the 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Slovenia in March 2017.
The defender is the Gers’ fifth signing of the transfer window after Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings all arrived on loan while Declan John completed a permanent move from Cardiff City.
Martin could make his debut on Sunday when the Light Blues travel north to face Highland League minnows Fraserburgh in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at tiny Bellslea Park.
