Kris Boyd: Rangers must enter talks with this proven SPL goal machine

By Will Butcher

Kris Boyd is adamant that Kenny Miller is deserving of a new contract with Rangers after he scored twice during the Gers’ 3-0 win over Aberdeen.

Miller, 37, struck two goals in as many minutes to send Pedro Caixinha’s side on their way late on at Pittodrie on Sunday, as he looks to prove he is worth a new deal at Ibrox.

The 69-time Scotland international has less than two months left on his current contract, despite leading the goalscoring charts in the league for the Gers with eight strikes.

Miller has proven himself to be an established goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership throughout his career, scoring 64 times in 142 games top-flight matches north of the border.

Speaking to Sky Sports 2’s live broadcast of the match, former Gers striker Boyd claimed his old side must look to extend Miller’s contract after he starred in the surprise win.

“They need leaders, he scores important goals and is an important part of his (Caixinha) side,” Boyd said.

“Miller or (Wes) Foderingham are contenders for Player of the Year this season, and that is why I think he should offer him a new deal but they might go down a younger route.”

Miller opened the scoring in the 79th minute, lashing home a bouncing ball in the Aberdeen penalty area with a superb strike that was completely against the run of play.

He then doubled his lead just two minutes later, slotting the ball past Joe Lewis when put through one-on-one with the Dons goalkeeper.

Rangers’ victory was rounded off by substitute Joe Dodoo, as he cut inside from the left flank before firing home an effort past Lewis at his near post.

The win sees the Gers close the gap between themselves and Sunday’s opponents, with nine points now separating the sides in second and third place.
