Lallana highlights Liverpool weakness, says what type of player must be brought in
By Danny Wright
Adam Lallana is hoping that Liverpool bring in the “best players” possible this summer in order to strengthen their chances of future success.
The Reds have already bolstered their squad with the signings of Dominic Solanke, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, but Jurgen Klopp is continually linked with making further additions to his side.
Lallana, 29, is now looking for Klopp to give him and his team-mates a lot more competition for a spot in the first-team and has highlighted the lack of options from the bench as one of his sides’ weaknesses.
“I want the best players to be linked with Liverpool and coming to Liverpool,” he said, as quoted by the Telegraph.
“If you are talking about it from a personal point of view, the pressure to get better and the competition for places is healthy. That is what we need. At times last year, our bench probably wasn’t as strong as we would have liked it to be. If we are going to achieve something, we are going to need a strong bench. We need a strong squad and players need to be on their toes. It is all good.
“There are 30 players out here with the three goalkeepers and a few young lads. That is a hell of a lot of players. You only have to look at the substitution that the manager can make. He is now replacing pace with pace and goals with goals.”
Liverpool have been widely reported to be chasing Southampton defender Vigil van Dijk this summer with the Liverpool Echo recently claimed that the Dutchman is set for crunch talks with his manager ahead of a possible move to Anfield.
Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo has also reported that Barcelona’s Rafinha is a target of the Reds, who are preparing for life back in the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League last time out.
Lallana was key in helping the Reds secure a top four spot as he scored eight goals and supplied seven assists in 31 appearances in the league last season.
Whatever Liverpool’s targets are next season, they will surely want to keep hold of their best players in order to reach them.
However they could now be facing the prospect of losing Philippe Coutinho as Catalan newspaper SPORT has reported that he has told the Merseysiders that he wants to leave after agreeing terms with Barcelona.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds have made an approach to sign this Belgian centre-back.
