Leeds 25-year-old scoops award after blistering run of form

Leeds striker Chris Wood has scooped the PFA Fans’ Championship Player of the Month award for January after a blistering run of form for the club.

The 25-year-old scored six goals in four Championship matches last month, helping Garry Monk’s side earn a valuable nine points during those encounters.

Wood beat Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale and Bristol City forward Tommy Abraham to the top prize after collecting almost half of the supporters votes.

Furthermore, for the second consecutive month, a Whites player has won this prize after Wood’s teammate, Pontus Jansson also picked up this award in December.

New Zealand international Wood scored some important goals for his side in January as they aim to secure promotion to the Premier League.

He scored the only goal of the game as Monk’s side beat promotion rivals Derby at Elland Road, added with the opening goal during the 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

Overall this season, the former Leicester City player has netted an impressive 18 goals in 29 league games as he is set to break the 20-goal barrier.

Wood has found the back of the net a further three times in four EFL Cup games, with his team eventually losing in the quarter-finals to Liverpool.

As a result, the Yorkshire club are fifth in the Championship table on 54 points from their 30 games, seven points behind Brighton who occupy the final automatic spot.
