Leeds backed to seal ‘amazing’ Galan deal as more ‘quality’ signings mooted – Whelan
Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to strike a bargain deal for SD Huesca full-back Javi Galan this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the defender could be a “little diamond” for Marcelo Bielsa.
As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (2nd June), Leeds have approached the 26-year-old’s representatives to discuss a potential move.
It is understood the left-back’s release clause has been slashed from £7million to £3.5million following Huesca’s relegation from La Liga.
He has also garnered interest from Sevilla, who finished fourth in the Spanish top flight.
Whelan insisted Galan would be a bargain signing who could save Leeds money to spend elsewhere.
“It’s absolutely nothing for a player, it really is,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“It’s quite amazing that is the release clause for a player that’s very important to a team. Look, what are you going to lose by spending £3.5million on a player? Very little. It doesn’t seem much of a risk.
“It’s all gain, in my opinion, on that one. When you know you’ve got other clubs with big pedigree like Sevilla looking at him as well, you know you could be getting yourself a little diamond there for next to nothing.
“What else could you do with the leftover money that you may have spent on another left-back? You can put that towards something else.
“At times our squad looked really strong when everyone was fit. When it wasn’t fit, it looked a little bit depleted.
“We need to bring in quality. If we can get them all in at the right price and get some bargains along the way, absolutely, get involved.”
Galan has made 53 La Liga appearances to date.
His contract at Huesca is set to expire next summer.
In other news, Leeds United are close to sealing blockbuster new deal – and more are set to follow.
