Leeds backed to sign ‘brilliant’ 18-goal/assist forward to replace Hernandez – Ex-manager

Alex McLeish has suggested West Brom winger Matheus Pereira could be Pablo Hernandez’s successor at Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the 25-year-old would be an “absolutely fantastic” addition at Elland Road.

As reported by the Daily Express, Leeds are among the clubs keen on snapping Pereira up following West Brom’s relegation.

Foot Mercato claim the winger’s agent, Jolden Vergette, has already started fielding enquiries from English clubs.

Leeds may be in the market for a new attacking midfielder after confirming Hernandez’s departure this summer.

McLeish suggested Pereira would be “very much available” despite having a contract until 2024.

McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Absolutely brilliant. A very technical player and I think it would be a great acquisition that I can see happening.

“You would think he would be very much available due to the fact West Brom are in the Championship now.

“Nobody wants to be likened to somebody else. You want to be your own man. Pablo has had a fantastic career but he is getting to an age where the legs are affected a wee bit.

“That can be very visible at times. It is right you get a new pretender. A new kid on the block continuing the marvellous work he has done. Also, adding to Leeds’ terrific entertainment levels.”

Hernandez managed to start just three times in 16 league appearances during the 2020/21 campaign.

Pereira meanwhile was an attacking talisman for West Brom, with 12 goals and six assists under his belt across all competitions.

However, his impressive displays were not enough to prevent the Baggies from suffering the drop.
