Leeds eye shock summer move for rapid forward from title chasers, Jorge Mendes is agent – report

Leeds United are eyeing up a summer move for Benfica forward Diogo Goncalves, according to a report.

Portuguese newspaper Record claims that Leeds are in the hunt to sign Goncalves, 21, after Wolves failed to snap him up.

It is understood that Gonclaves is a client of super-agent Jorge Mendes, which makes Leeds’ interest quite shocking after owner Andrea Radrizzani slammed Wolves’ usage of the agent to attract high quality talents to Molineux.

Goncalves is known for his rapid pace but is barely getting into the Benfica first-team at the moment as the Lisbon giants chase the Liga NOS title in Portugal.

The Portuguese wide-forward, who can play on both wings, has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, supplying two assists.

Leeds have already taken one player from second-placed Benfica this season when striker Oliver Sarkic was snapped up on a loan deal which was later made permanent.

Football Insider verdict

Goncalves is a player with a great amount of potential who would be a top signing for Leeds. Victor Orta has not shied away from snapping up players from across Europe and it remains to be seen whether his mass overhaul of the Under-23s squad will prove fruitful. But getting in a young player from a proven supplier of top talent like Benfica would be a great boost for the first-team. Goncalves has been fed a winning philosophy at the Lisbon club and with him not getting much game time, he may be willing to quit and move to England. Leeds just need to stump up the cash and they will be getting a great player.
