Leeds fans can’t believe what Illan Meslier has just done in academy – ‘France’s number one’
Leeds United outcast Illan Meslier featured in Premier League 2 on Saturday.
The Frenchman is yet to feature under Daniel Farke this season and has now found himself as part of the under-21 squad at Elland Road.
He started in between the sticks for the youth side as the Whites faced off against West Ham at LNER Stadium.
Leeds went on to fall to a 3-1 defeat against the Hammers, with Ollie Pickles’ strike being cancelled out by the claret and blue outfit.
Meslier may have conceded three, but saved a first-half penalty from Joshua Ajala that sparked a massive reaction from supporters on social media.
Leeds United make sarcastic comments towards Illan Meslier
The 25-year-old has seen his reputation completely collapse in Yorkshire after being completely exiled by Farke after a shocking end to last season in the Championship.
That decision has been upheld even when summer signing Lucas Perri was dropped after a poor start to life at Elland Road.
It sums up everything that he is now playing under-21 football, and is now receiving sarcastic responses from fans after a moment of quality.
His save against West Ham U21s sparked one fan to claim he is “France’s number one”, while another remarked that he “should be starting every game” for Leeds.
That was echoed further when a fan suggested that they “always rated him” as someone else urged Farke to “get him in the team for later”.
Elland Road is preparing to play host to Manchester City, but even with this recommendation, it is hugely unlikely he will feature in any capacity.
That sums up the wider feeling surrounding the keeper who has just become a laughing stock in LS11, rather than the top keeper many expected him to be.
Meslier has been backed after West Ham u21s heroics
The Leeds supporter base have all-but given up on the Frenchman, especially with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
Meslier has been central to ridicule, even after making a penalty save in Premier League 2, but there have been some elements of positivity.
One supporter reached out to say, “Get in there, Meslier lad!” and another said, “My keeper”.
These represent limited amounts of positivity aimed towards the shotstopper, representing just how sour things have turned at Elland Road.
