Noel Whelan has hailed Pablo Hernandez’s new Leeds United deal as the “best news of the season”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward hailed Hernandez as an “outstanding” player who still has huge amounts to offer the team.
Leeds announced on Tuesday that the Spanish attacking midfielder had signed a two-year contract extension tying him to the club until the summer of 2022.
This comes after Whelan revealed to Football Insider last month that he had been told Hernandez was to be handed a new contract by the Championship promotion hopefuls.
“I’m not surprised Pablo has a got a new deal but it’s still the best news of the season,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s an outstanding player and keeping him is massive for the club.
“I don’t think he’s been at his best this season, but that tells you how good he is. Even when he’s not at his absolute best, he’s still better than pretty much every player in the Championship.
“For me, he is should be one of the first names on the teams heet along with Kalvin Phillips and Ben White. That’s how important he still is.
“He’s a great player with a huge role to play this season in getting us back to the Premier League.”
Hernandez started Leeds’ first eight Championship matches of the season before injury struck and he missed six weeks before returning from the bench as a sub for the last two matches.
Since signing for United in the summer of 2016, initially on loan, the former Spain international has scored 29 goals and supplied 32 assists in 132 matches and won consecutive club player of the year awards.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed the terms of a £5million-plus deal.
