Leeds set to sign 27-year-old from top-flight club – report
By Derek Smithson
Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald is set to join Leeds, according to a report.
German outlet Kicker claim that the 27-year-old has reached an agreement to leave the German top-flight club and is on his way to Elland Road.
It is understood that the Whites have won the race ahead of European teams such as Nantes and PAOK Saloniki to secure his signature.
Thomas Christiansen is set to make his first big singing since taking charge at the Yorkshire club and bring in an experienced shot stopper.
Wiedwald was a regular for Bundesliga side Bremen last season as they finished eight in the league.
The goalkeeper made 26 appearances across all competitions and managed five clean sheets in return.
He has been an important player since his arrival at the German side in 2015, but is now ready to experience his first taste of English football.
Football Insider verdict:
Leeds fans are patiently waiting to see who Christiansen signs at Elland Road and Wiedwald would be a huge statement. The 27-year-old was a regular starter in the Bundesliga and would arrive at Elland Road with good pedigree. He is beginning to reach the peak of his career and Leeds will be signing someone that can go straight into the starting line-up. However, current number one Rob Green could feel hard done by as he was one of the club’s outstanding players last season. The 37-year-old would certainly have some very stiff competition if Wiedwald arrived and that should only aid their promotion aspirations.
In other Leeds transfer news, they are in a two-horse race to sign an international defender.
