Leeds make six-figure bid for Bundesliga ace, talks scheduled – report

By Danny Wright

Leeds have made a six-figure bid for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claims that the 27-year-old is on his way to Elland Road for talks with the Championship club while the two teams try to reach an agreement on a fee understood to be worth £400,000.

The Bundesliga ace was a key feature in the Bremen first-team last season as they finished eighth, making 25 appearances in the league and keeping five clean sheets in the process.

German news outlet Kicker has reported that Wiedwald has reached an agreement with the Whites after they beat Nantes and PAOK Saloniki to his signature. However the Mail claims that the two clubs are yet to settle on a concrete fee.

The German ‘keeper moved back to Werder Bremen in 2015 after spells with Duisberg and Frankfurt followed his progression through the Bremen youth academy.

However the Bundesliga giants have recently announced on their official website that they are close to completing a deal for Slavia Prague goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, which will add a lot of competition to the No 1 spot at the Weserstadion.

Football Insider Verdict

Leeds definitely need a new goalkeeper this summer and Wiedwald looks as though he can offer a lot of experience between the sticks in Thomas Christiansen’s side. The Dane will be monitored closely in his transfer dealings over the summer after his surprise appointment was announced in June. However the Leeds fans shouldn’t worry too much about the signing of Wiedwald, because playing for one of the top sides in the Bundesliga every weeks doesn’t mean he won’t be good enough for the Whites. Rob Green did well in goals for the Yorkshire club last season, but at the age of 37, the club need to start looking at a long-term replacement.

In other Leeds news, the club have signed this midfielder on a three-year deal.
