Leeds United news: Whelan issues ‘incredible’ Marcelo Bielsa verdict after ‘amazing’ footage emerges

Noel Whelan has claimed Marcelo Bielsa is “right at the top” of the list of “the best” Leeds United managers in history.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 66-year-old leaves behind an “incredible legacy” at the club.

Bielsa’s Leeds United exit was confirmed via a club statement yesterday (27 February) after a run of one win in seven league games.

As seen in footage posted to Twitter (per @Nobbyboy1, 27 February) fans waited in line at Thorp Arch to show their appreciation to the man who restored their Premier League status after a 16-year absence.

Whelan claimed the legendary Argentine will be “in the hearts of fans for many years to come”.

“I think he’s right at the top in terms of the best Leeds United managers in history,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s such a lovable guy, he’s had success, he’s brought us back to the Premier League. The style of play he brought, the way he improved players, he’s given us an identity.

“He’s just done so much. He’s brought so much passion and has brought everyone together. Not just the fans and the club, but the city of Leeds.

“He will hold an incredible legacy here. He’ll be in the hearts of the fans for so many years to come. We can see that with some of the amazing videos and tributes we’re seeing online.”

As per the BBC (27 February), Bielsa has the fifth-highest win percentage of any Leeds United manager in history to take charge for more than 50 games.

The former Argentina boss leaves the Whites just two points clear of relegation danger.
