Agbonlahor tells Leeds to U-turn on planned Roberts talks after key reveal
Gabby Agbonlahor is not convinced Tyler Roberts is worthy of a new Leeds United contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker insisted the 22-year-old needs to add more Premier League goals and assists to his name.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports Roberts is one of a number of Leeds stars likely to enter contract talks this summer.
His current deal is set to expire at the end of next season and he has emerged as a regular starter in 2021.
With club-record signing Rodrigo Moreno struggling with injury, the Welshman has started their last 12 Premier League games.
In that time he has provided one assist but is still yet to score his first top-flight goal.
Roberts’ 24 Premier League appearances for the Whites, including 14 starts, have yielded just two assists.
Asked whether he had done enough to deserve a new contract, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Not really. He’s done well but you need more numbers. You need more goals and assists.
“It’s alright looking good in games but if you’re not getting goals and assists you’re not really adding much to the game.
“Yes, he’s done OK but he’s still got a lot to learn at this level and I’m not sure he should get a new contract.”
Roberts moved to Elland Road from West Bromwich Albion in January 2018 and has now played over 70 times for the Yorkshire giants.
The 13-time Wales international’s seven Leeds goals all came in the Championship.
In other news, Danny Mills has predicted Marcelo Bielsa to seal an “unexpected” £20m+ midfield signing at Leeds United.
