Leeds United’s updated stance on ‘fairy-tale’ move to re-sign Kalvin Phillips
Leeds United are not considering a move to re-sign Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window despite ongoing speculation about his future at Man City.
The former Elland Road midfielder has made just one appearance so far this season and is not part of Pep Guardiola‘s long-term plans for the future.
However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Leeds have moved on from their long-term pursuit of the 30-year-old and are prioritising more urgent positions ahead of the mid-season window.
This comes after Football Insider revealed on 7 September that Leeds are concerned about their attacking options, with a new winger and striker on their radar.
Any suggestions of a potential return for Phillips, while it would be greatly welcomed by the supporters, has now been pushed far down the club’s pecking order.
Leeds United pull plug on Kalvin Phillips pursuit
Football Insider revealed in October that Phillips is almost certain to leave Man City when the window opens, whether it is on a loan or permanent deal.
While the midfielder remains very highly regarded at Elland Road, as a fan of the club and an academy product, that will not dictate the club’s transfer plans.
Instead, Daniel Farke believes his side are well-stocked in central midfield, while Ethan Ampadu’s performances have remained impressive throughout his spell.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “It’s possible but I don’t think it’s probably something that will materialise. I think Leeds have moved on from Kalvin Phillips right now.
“Ethan Ampadu is in that defensive midfield role and playing well for Daniel Farke’s side.
“Look, it’d be a fairy tale story if he was to return to Leeds. It’d be very popular among the fan base as well, obviously.

“But I think Leeds probably looking for other areas of the squad that they’re looking to strengthen rather than in central midfield right now.
“I think they’re well-stocked in that area, even though Kalvin Philips looks set to move on from Man City.”
Wolves and Everton set sights on Phillips deal
Despite Leeds withdrawing their interest, there is no shortage of suitors for the Man City midfielder, with multiple Premier League clubs weighing up a move.
Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Wolves have set their sights on Phillips ahead of the January transfer window and could look to land him.
The Black Country outfit will explore the possibility of a loan or permanent deal as they aim to bolster Rob Edwards’ squad after a disastrous start to the season.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed in October that Everton are long-term admirers of Phillips and have an active interest ahead of the mid-season window.
While the Toffees would be unable to agree loan terms due to Jack Grealish’s deal on Merseyside, they are keeping a close eye on the midfielder’s situation.
