Leeds 25-year-old hails teammates after win against Sheffield Wednesday

Liam Cooper has hailed his Leeds teammates for digging in deep as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Garry Monk’s side went into the game level on points with their promotion rivals knowing three points would prove to be crucial come the end of the season.

Striker Chris Wood, who has been an integral figure in the Whites sitting in the top six, opened the scoring after 24 minutes – his 20th goal of the campaign.

A simple cross from the left-hand side was not dealt by the Wednesday defence as Wood pounced on their costly mistake which was to try and play the New Zealander on offside.

Later in the second half, striker Jordan Rhodes missed a penalty after Robert Green produced a magnificent save.

After the game, 25-year-old Cooper, who was on the bench for the game, sent this message to supporters as posted on his personal Twitter account.

“Big result,” said Cooper. “Thought the lads were different class and dug in deep when we had to. Place was rocking, always a massive advantage for us.”

Monk opted to continue with his regular defensive pairing of Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley who secured another clean sheet for their side.

The duo kept the attacking threat of Rhodes and Fernando Forestieri quiet as the away team only mustered one shot on target.

As a result of that win, the Whites move up to fourth in the table where they are on 61 points from their 34 games, seven points behind the automatic places.

By contrast, Wednesday remain in sixth, but they will be looking over their shoulders at seventh-placed Fulham who have a game in hand.
