Lingard may ‘throw a strop’ to force Manchester United exit after twist – pundit
Alex McLeish has suggested Jesse Lingard could “throw a strop” to try and force a move out of Manchester United before Monday’s deadline.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 29-year-old might have to make his unhappiness known behind the scenes to join another club this month.
As reported by the Telegraph on Wednesday (26 January), Lingard is deeply frustrated at Old Trafford after talks between Newcastle and Manchester United stalled over the Red Devils’ demands.
The Red Devils reportedly want a £12million survival bonus included in the terms of the loan deal.
Meanwhile, the report states Manchester United are unwilling to deal with clubs they view as rivals for the top four, further limiting Lingard’s options.
As revealed by Football Insider on Friday (21 January), Newcastle have already had a £5million loan bid rejected.
McLeish suggested the attacking midfielder might have to rock the board behind closed doors.
However, he insisted any such behaviour would not be a reflection on Lingard’s character.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I don’t see them holding onto a player who might throw a strop. It’s not great for the dressing room.
“When I say throw a strop, Lingard might read that and go: ‘What are you saying?’
“I’m actually backing him because it would probably be worth the strop in order for him to get away and play the game that he loves.”

Lingard has struggled for game time since returning from his loan spell at West Ham last summer.
He has not started a single Premier League game for Manchester United this term.
