Liverpool 26-year-old explains current slump, admits mistakes

Georginio Wijnaldum has said that the Liverpool squad are currently lacking confidence and has admitted that his mistakes may have cost the team over recent weeks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are yet to win a Premier League game in 2017 following last Saturday’s defeat to Hull and the 26-year-old has explained that learning from past mistakes is the way forward.

Liverpool fans were furious with Wijnaldum’s performance in their 2-1 loss to Wolves in the FA Cup in January.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Dutch winger said: “That’s what we’re trying to do now, trying to learn from the mistakes we’ve made in the games.

“And also, I am trying to learn from the mistakes I’ve made in the games, looking forward to trying to [perform] better in every game.”

Liverpool’s slump has seen them drop from second place in the Premier League, just six points behind leaders Chelsea, to fifth – 13 points behind Antonio Conte’s side.

Much has been said about their drop in form with many fans and pundits blaming tiredness. However the Dutch international believes that it is down to a lack of confidence in the team.

“Sometimes you’re in a flow and sometimes not,” Wijnaldum added. “We’re in a situation where we’re not in a flow, but we must have confidence and faith we can change it.

“We showed it against Chelsea, but we have to show that against other teams we’re playing against. We must get the focus to play again like before, playing with freedom.”

The Merseyside club signed Wijnaldum for £23million from Newcastle in July 2016. He has made 22 Premier League appearances for Liverpool since his relegation with the Magpies last season, scoring three goals.

Liverpool’s next game is against second-placed Tottenham on Saturday before a long break of 16 days before their next game at Leicester.
