Liverpool backed to complete Anthony Gordon signing after blowing Arsenal away

Liverpool are leading the race ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal to sign Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the Reds “have got their heads in front” to sign the 25-year-old.

Liverpool could pursue Gordon in the summer transfer window, with the club also looking to replace Mohamed Salah if he departs.

Despite Liverpool having spent big in the market last summer, the club are expected to be active again to address areas of their squad after failing to defend their Premier League title this season.

Anthony Gordon a ‘very good option’ for Liverpool

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Gordon would fit in better at Liverpool than Arsenal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the Gunners are currently not keen on signing Gordon.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “His performances haven’t been great. He got booed off, I believe, at the weekend when Everton won up there.

“And of course, he wasn’t well received by the Everton fans as well. I think Arsenal may be a very good option for him, but I don’t see him fitting in quite that well into the Arsenal squad as I think he might do in Liverpool.

“So I think it’s still a two-horse race. And I’m not so sure Arsenal are really that keen right now. I think they will wait and see. But no, I think Liverpool, to me, have still got their heads in front.”

Liverpool accelerate plans to sign forward

Sources have told Football Insider that RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande is a key target for Liverpool in the summer window.

Manchester United will also compete with their rivals for the 19-year-old, who could cost up to £80million, with RB Leipzig willing to listen to offers.

The Bundesliga club does not want to lose Diomande if possible, but they could net a profit after only signing him for £17m less than 12 months ago.
