Liverpool 28-year-old to be axed against Tottenham, career at club over – report

Simon Mignolet is set to be axed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for their upcoming Premier League clash with Tottenham on Saturday, according to a report.

The Sun claim that Klopp has run out patience with the 28-year-old stopper for the second time this season and could be set to recall Loris Karius to his starting XI.

However, the pending axe could have severe repercussions on Mignolet’s long-term future at the club, amid speculation that they are looking to recruit a new goalkeeper in the summer.

The Sun report that “a second axing is likely to spell the end of the road for Mignolet in the summer, with a move for Joe Hart a possibility”.

The goalkeeping position has become a real cause for concern for the Reds this season, with Klopp having been forced to shuffle his pack once already this season.

Karius began the campaign as Liverpool’s No.1 goalkeeper, but after a series of high profile errors, he was dropped in favour of Mignolet.

However, Mignolet has done little in recent weeks to prove he is deserving of the No.1 jersey, and Klopp is now having to consider yet another drastic change.

If he does bring Karius back into the fold, it would be nothing other than a dramatic U-turn from the Liverpool boss, and prove how alarmingly desperate they are in need of a reliable shot-stopper.

Unfortunately for the German boss, the opportunity to acquire a new goalkeeper has passed, and he must now stick with the calamitous duo at least until the end of the season.

He is not likely to waste any time hunting for a replacement in the summer, however, with Manchester City outcast Joe Hart reportedly already on the radar.

Mignolet has made 17 appearances for the club this season, but has kept only five clean-sheets, his last coming in the narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester City on December 31.
