‘Different class’ – Andrew Robertson raves about Celtic player
By James Black
Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has hailed Kieran Tierney as being “different class” – but warned the Celtic full-back that he is ready to fight him for his Scotland jersey in the future.
Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has managed to accomodate both players so far with Tierney switching to right-back and Robertson at his natural left-back position.
Both players are performing in the Champions League for their respective clubs and it’s a dilemma that doesn’t seem to have caused any issues for Strachan so far.
Robertson admits Tierney would rather play at left-back too but thinks the Tartan Army are playing well enough with both in the team.
“I don’t know if the gaffer had an open mind to trying us both and maybe saw my right peg,” he said as quoted by the BBC Sport website.
“KT would prefer to play left-back, it’s his natural position, but since he’s gone over there he’s been different class.
“It’s been working out quite well, but there might come a time when both of us need to compete for the left-back spot. If we do that, we’ll be ready to compete.
“Just now, it’s working quite well that we’re on both flanks and causing trouble down both sides. It’s up to the manager if that continues, but we’re happy with it.
“I’ve watched KT a lot and he’s a great young talent. There’s a lot more to come from him as well.”
Scotland could book a playoff place with two wins in their final two World Cup qualifiers over the next week.
Strachan’s side are aiming to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in 20 years since the 1998 World Cup in France.
The Scots face Slovenia and Slovakia in their closing games of a qualfication campaign that looked to over midway through.
Scotland also need other results to go their way if they are to make the playoffs for next summer’s tournament in Russia.
