Kieran Maguire: Liverpool have ‘next Foden’ in their ranks after Klopp transfer confession

Liverpool do not need to spend big in the transfer market because they can make progress with the likes of Harvey Elliot.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Mersyesiders’ transfer window so far.

Liverpool’s only signing of the summer so far is the £36million capture of Ibrahima Konate while the club has sanctioned £29m in sales.

They have, however, signed Fabinho and Alisson Becker to new contracts.

And Football Insider revealed on 17 August that Liverpool are in advanced talks with Jordan Henderson over a new deal.

As per the Independent on 13 August, Jurgen Klopp confessed renewals are “not as exciting” as new signings but that “real fans” would be happy.

And Maguire claims that Liverpool’s youngsters like Elliot and Curtis Jones mean the club is in safe hands regardless of transfer activity.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “For me, this idea that you can only improve if you spend money isn’t necessarily true.

“They’ve chosen to go down this route of renewing contracts and locking in their assets.

“They have also got Harvey Elliot in their squad, who could be the next Phil Foden. They’ve got Curtis Jones, he could have a breakthrough season.

“But managers and fans seem to disregard this all the time because they want the owners to put more money in.

We have now become embedded with the idea that progress is only made by spending money in the transfer market.”
