Liverpool in three-horse race for £13m-rated defender – report

By Dominic Toner

Liverpool are interested in signing Torino defender Davide Zappacosta, according to a report.

TransferMarketWeb claim that the Reds are in a three-way battle alongside Italian giants Napoli and Roma for the 24-year-olds signature.

The report details that the right-back would cost £13million, but Serie A club Torino are reluctant to sell.

Liverpool have been eyeing a move for the Italian right-back, who has played alongside England international Joe Hart this season.

The defender has made 24 appearances this season and chipped in with three assists.

He has been a regular with Torino following his arrival in 2015, but spent his first season as a right winger.

The versatile ace has been preferred for his defensive qualities this season and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp may be keen to bolster his options in the summer.

Football Insider verdict:

Zappacosta is an emerging young defender that has proven himself in Italy’s top-flight in recent seasons and has also earned two senior caps for his country. The defender would be a useful squad addition as his versatility allows him to play in a number of formations. However, a deal for the Zappacosta doesn’t appear to make too much sense for Klopp. The Merseyside club already have two strong right-back options in Nathaniel Clyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold. They certainly could do with a defensive reshuffle in the summer to help them improve, but the right-back slot is the only position that should remain. England international Clyne has continued to improve during his time at Anfield and Alexander-Arnold is one for the future.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the club are eyeing a 22-year-old defender with a £38.8million release clause.
