Liverpool news: Pundit issues ‘big’ Trent Alexander-Arnold claim after source’s right-back signing reveal
Frank McAvennie has told Liverpool to sign a right-back replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Alexander-Arnold’s enthusiasm reminds him of David Beckham.
On 25 April, sources told this site that the Reds will move for a new senior right-back as one of five new signings planned.
Jurgen Klopp has utilised Alexander-Arnold in a more midfield role in recent weeks and is keen to add to his pool of right-backs as a result.
The Merseysiders are also targeting a new centre-back at the end of the season in what is set to be a big summer window.
Klopp has become concerned about the defensive capability of his side and is keen to add reinforcements this summer.
Alexander-Arnold’s defensive capabilities have been called into question this season, with former Reds defender Jamie Carragher claiming the 24-year-old’s defending is “not good enough” and doesn’t think it will improve.
McAvennie agreed with Klopp’s desire for another right-back.
“Trent Alexander-Arnold should not be a right-back, he can’t defend,” he told Football Insider.
“But I think they can use him in the midfield – he is a huge player and influence for them.
“He would cover [in defence] because he is that way inclined. But you have got to have him in the team, moving him into midfield is a good idea.

“He has got the energy, the pace, the enthusiasm for midfield. Let the big boys like Thiago [Alcantara] control the midfield and push him out wide.
“David Beckham was the same, could not defend but gave 100 per cent, that is what Trent will do.“
