Liverpool news: Pundit warns Mohamed Salah could yet break promise – ‘there’s more to this’

Noel Whelan has warned one of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane could depart Liverpool this summer despite positive noises emerging about their respective Anfield futures.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed there is “more to the situation than meets the eye”.

As quoted by Sky Sports (27 May), Salah, 29, confirmed he will be at Liverpool next season “for sure” despite an ongoing standoff over a new contract.

Mane, 30, has revealed he will give a “special” answer about his future following the conclusion of Saturday’s (28 May) Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Both stars, who have notched a combined 54 goals across all competitions this season, are out of contract at the end of next season.

Whelan claimed the arrivals of Luis Diaz and Fabio Carvalho could point to a major exit.

“I always felt that one of them had to give – Mane or Salah,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“I still believe that, in the back of my mind – one of them may leave, which would be huge.

“After bringing in Diaz, after bringing in Carvalho, you almost feel like they’re paving the way for one of them to leave.

“Which one? We don’t know yet, but I still think there is more to this Salah and Mane situation than meets the eye.”

A Liverpool source told Football Insider earlier this month (14 May) that Salah is prepared to compromise on his previous demands of £500,000-a-week.

The pair have won the Premier League and Champions League titles during trophy-laden spells at Anfield.
