Liverpool senior loan stars: Who will stay and who will leave in summer transfer window

Liverpool have five first teamers out on loan as they look to get match experience away from Jurgen Klopp’s highly competitive senior squad.

As per the official Liverpool FC website, the loanees are members of the first-team squad on Merseyside; Marcelo Pitaluga, Sepp van den Berg, Calvin Ramsay, Nat Phillips and Fabio Carvalho.

Football Insider has analysed how the five are performing at their respective clubs and what the future holds for them upon their return to Liverpool.

Marcelo Pitaluga (21)

Brazilian goalkeeper Pitaluga is currently plying his trade in the League of Ireland with St Pat’s Athletic, where he has made six appearances so far.

Having been a starter at the beginning of the season, the 21-year-old has since dropped to the bench, with his club currently fourth in the league table.

Despite the lack of game time recently, Pitaluga should be part of Liverpool’s future plans, particularly given how Reds number two Caoimhin Kelleher wants to leave this summer for regular football.

Verdict: STAYS

Sepp van den Berg (22)

Central defender Van den Berg joined the Reds all the way back in 2019, but has just four senior appearances to his name.

The lack of action at Anfield for the 22-year-old has been a result of his various loan moves, with the player now at Mainz after previous spells at Preston North End and Schalke.

Given the long list of centre-back options ahead of him, it is very likely that Van den Berg will finally leave Anfield permanently this summer.

Verdict: LEAVES

Fabio Carvalho (21)

Liverpool

Carvalho is really enjoying himself in the Championship with Hull City, with the attacker having already netted eight goals despite only moving there in January.

It is the 21-year-old’s second loan spell away from Merseyside, having previously spent time at RB Leipzig.

A miserable period in Germany would have worried Liverpool chiefs, but sources told Football Insider in January that the club still have high hopes for the youngster, and the very latest from inside Anfield figures is that Carvalho is likely to force his way back into the Anfield picture thanks to his current loan spell in England.

Verdict: STAYS

Nat Phillips (27)

No longer in his youth, Phillips is currently a regular at Cardiff City after putting a nightmare loan spell at Celtic behind him, where he was slaughtered by fans of the Glasgow club.

The 27-year-old made just eight appearances for the Bhoys earlier in the campaign, but has already featured 15 times for the Bluebirds.

He has certainly impressed at times during his lengthy stay at Liverpool, but given his age and the fact he is well down the pecking order in terms of centre-backs, Phillips is very likely to move on permanently in the summer transfer window.

Verdict: LEAVES

Calvin Ramsay (20)

Ramsay arrived at Anfield from Aberdeen with very high hopes, but unfortunately his time at the club has been heavily disrupted by injuries.

That has also been the case during his loan spells at Preston and Bolton Wanderers this season, with the 20-year-old limited to just six appearances in all competitions.

Fellow youngster Conor Bradley and senior star Trent Alexander-Arnold are unlikely to be removed from the right-back scene anytime soon, but Ramsay should still be given time to prove himself when he is fully fit.

Verdict: STAYS

As mentioned, the Reds have plenty of other youngsters out on loan this season as the players look to make a name for themselves ahead of a return to Anfield.

Perhaps closest to a regular spot in the first team are the likes of Tyler Morton (Hull), Owen Beck (Dundee), Billy Koumetio (Blackburn Rovers) and Luke Chambers (Wigan Athletic), with many other young stars not far behind.
