Liverpool must elbow Everton aside to land Premier League assist king

COMMENT By Russell Edge

Liverpool should move quickly this summer and snatch Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson from under the noses of West Ham and Everton.

The Hammers and the Toffees have both been sniffing around the Icelandic playmaker with a view to a summer deal, but it should be red, not blue, that the 27-year-old should be wearing on Merseyside.

Everton have shown serious interest in the Swansea man recently, and were reported to have a big money deal turned down last summer, but are yet to convince the Swans to part with their star player.

However, in a recent interview with Goal, Sigurdsson spoke of his dream to play for a “big club”, and they don’t come much bigger in England than Liverpool.

It wouldn’t be the first time Liverpool have shown interest in the player; he turned down the Reds to move to Tottenham Hotspur from Hoffenheim back in 2012.

However, this snub shouldn’t stop the Liverpool hierarchy from making a move yet again, as he could prove to be the perfect player to fit into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Whilst there is the argument Liverpool are hardly in need of another attacking midfielder, the Swansea midfielder could add more than just depth to Klopp’s side.

Sigurdsson is the leading assist maker in the Premier League this season, and with 8 goals to his name, the playmaker is a proven talent in the Premier League from both open play and set pieces.

With 39 chances created from set plays, Phillipe Coutinho could have a contender for free kicks were he to arrive at Anfield.

He’s also a phenomenally hard worker, having covered more ground (318.2 km) so far, and with Klopp’s desire to play a high pressing game, Sigurdsson would be an ideal choice.

As shown with Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino this season, Klopp also desires players who are adaptable, and Sigurdsson is certainly that.

His versatility has meant we have seen him play in the centre of the park, out on both wings and even as an out-and-out striker, all to good effect.

Sigurdsson says he wants to take the step up to the next level, and at 27-years old and playing at the peak of his career, Liverpool is the perfect place to prove himself.
