Liverpool transfer news: Keith Wyness reveals the truth on ‘financial issues’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the transfer disappointment at Liverpool is not down to “financial issues”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the new Anfield regime are just “taking their time to get things right”.

Liverpool are yet to make a summer signing and are the only Premier League club not to add a new face in the summer window, which closes on 30 August.

A deal for midfielder Martin Zubimendi has collapsed in recent days as the 25-year-old opted to stay at Real Sociedad rather than accept Liverpool’s offer.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (13 August) that Reds boss Arne Slot is pushing the club’s sporting director Richard Hughes to sign a proven midfield star.

The Merseysiders start the new campaign against Ipswich Town on Saturday (17 August) after finishing third in the Premier League table last term.

Liverpool transfer disappointment not down to ‘financial issues’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think this is down to financial issues.

“I just think it’s the new regime taking their time to get things right.

“They’ve got big shoes to fill after Klopp, so they’ve got to be sure they can put their own fingerprints on things and get the transformation right.

“They’re looking at every position to see where they are stronger or weaker, and they’ll look at who is coming through the youth system.

“There’ll be challenges.

“The clock is just starting to tick now, so we’ll be watching closely.”
