‘Madness’ – Pundit suggests Mourinho baffled by Spurs star after ‘Ridiculous’ decision
Noel Whelan claims that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will have been baffled by Heung-min Son’s decision to lash out in the defeat to Chelsea.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker says the South Korean star’s “moment of madness” caught everyone by surprise.
Son received his marching orders for kicking out at Antonio Rudiger in the Lilywhites’ 2-0 defeat, the club unsuccessful in their appeal to get the ban rescinded.
With the winger to miss games against Norwich City and Southampton, the 27-year-old having sat out the Boxing Day win over Brighton, Whelan says his manager will be baffled by what he saw last weekend.
“Sometimes players do the most ridiculous things,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“There, you look back on it and you think: ‘What was I doing, what was I thinking?’ But when something comes into your head in a split second and it just happens, a reaction, the only thing you can do is take the red card and reflect on it.
“Look back on it and go: What was going through my mind?’ I’m sure that’s the same thing that Mourinho’s thinking because he’s a player that hardly ever gets sent off. It shows that every now and then, people have that moment of madness.”
Son’s sending off was his second red card of the season, although his dismissal against Everton was later rescinded after the club launched an appeal.
Goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane saw Spurs beat Brighton in the winger’s absence, with the clash against Norwich taking place on Saturday.
In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has ripped into a senior player who “flatters to deceive” and is “killing” the team’s balance.
