Man City and Newcastle to agree huge deals after confirmed news – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Manchester City and Newcastle United now have the chance to agree bigger sponsorship deals following a relax to the associated party transaction (APT) rules.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted there are winners on both sides of the argument.
Man City took legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules at an arbitration hearing in June, with two aspects of the regulations deemed unlawful when the panel published its findings last month.
The Premier League issued proposed amendments earlier this month, with the top-flight clubs approving those changes at a meeting in London on 22 November.
It is believed 16 sides voted in favour of the proposals, ensuring the governing body received the required two-thirds majority, as only Man City, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest rejected the motion.
In a statement, the Premier League said the changes relate to “integrating the assessment of shareholder loans” and “include the removal of some of the amendments made to APT rules earlier this year”.
Man City recorded victory after APT rules relaxed
Wyness believes the clubs voted in the Premier League’s favour due to concerns over shareholder loans.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The shareholder loans were the key point.
“I think a lot of clubs would have supported it for that reason.
“Nevertheless, you could say it’s a Man City win as well because they’ve released some of the wording in the associated party valuation methods that would allow some of these big sponsorships now to go through.

“That means the clubs like Newcastle and Man City would now have the chance to try and get these bigger sponsorship deals through because the wording has been relaxed.
“Hopefully, there is winners on both sides and everybody can move on.”
