Kieran Maguire: Man City cashing in amid world-record £300m reveal

Man City are “reaping the dividends” from years of substantial losses as their on-pitch success yields huge commercial profits.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after City topped the Deloitte Football Money League for 2021-22.

The results, published last Thursday (19 January), showed that City’s revenue of £613million for the financial year was once again the highest in Europe.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, Man United and Paris Saint-Germain made up the top five, with 11 Premier League clubs in the top 20.

City’s commercial income for the year totalled £309.4m, a new record for the club.

Maguire saluted their progress in the commercial department, which he attributes to the success that long-term investment in the squad has brought about.

City have used the success of winning trophies to attract commercial partners,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Many of those commercial partners are based in other geographic areas, particularly in the Middle East, where it could be argued City’s strength lies in terms of appeal

“The fact their commercial income now tops £300m and is the highest in the world does show that new commercial partners and sponsors want to align their products with trophies.

City invested in players early on. Initially, they incurred very high losses as a result of that strategy. But it has brought success.

We can now see that they are starting to reap the dividends of that.
