Man City have active interest in signing Diogo Costa – expert

Man City have an active interest in signing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a potential long-term Ederson replacement.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson admitted there are “a couple of issues” he’d look at with the 25-year-old if he was looking to replace Ederson.

The 31-year-old is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2026, but the shot-stopper was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia throughout the summer.

The Brazil international ultimately stuck with the Premier League side and has remained a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad, having played every league fixture so far.

Football Insider revealed that Man City were plotting to sign a new goalkeeper if Ederson was going to make a switch, and the club are continuing to consider their long-term options.

Man City are looking at Diogo Costa as a potential Ederson replacement

“I’ve seen him a couple of times,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He’s got good technical ability, he’s got good awareness around his goal.

“But actually, the two Manchester United goals were carbon copies of each other, what he should have saved, both of them in the first half.

“There’s a couple of technical issues as in with his shot-stopping.

“He’s still only 25 years old, played over 100 league games for Porto.

“There’s one thing, you definitely bring him on for penalties, wouldn’t you? He’s a great penalty technician, he’s an expert at penalties.

“He’s the type of goalkeeper that on paper with the stats, the data, the numbers, and the figures that you would look at.

“But there’s just a couple of issues technically that I would put under scrutiny, and I’d look at when I’m looking at the batch of goalkeepers that they’re potentially going to look at, if and whenever Ederson is to move on.”
