Tottenham braced to potentially lose key player as PL rivals open talks – BBC

By Matt Bullin

Manchester City have began transfer negotiations with Tottenham over a possible summer move for Kyle Walker, according to a report.

BBC Sport claim the talks are in early stages and a transfer fee is yet to be agreed between the clubs for the 26-year-old right-back, and Spurs are now bracing themselves to potentially lose their key player.

This comes after the Mirror reported in early June that City were set to open talks with the North London club, but appears they have only just started.

Meanwhile, The Times stated on Thursday that Kieran Trippier had signed a new five-year deal at Spurs, which could be a signal that the club are ready to offload Walker.

Manager of Spurs’ Premier League rivals Pep Guardiola needs to invest in a new right-back this summer, as he has already cut loose Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

BBC report Sheffield United have a ten per cent sell-on clause on any transfer fee of more than the £3million they sold Walker for in 2009.

The 26-year-old was a mainstay of Spurs’ back line last term, making 39 appearances across all competitions.

The Walker-City transfer saga has been rumbling on for months now, but it finally appears as if the Manchester giants have made their move. Although a fee is not yet agreed, a price around £50million has been quoted in the past and it could be somewhere in that region. There is no doubt losing the England international would be a loss to Tottenham’s squad, but in Trippier they have a ready-made replacement. Meanwhile, the 26-year-old would provide pace and power to a shaky City back line which Guardiola will have to strengthen if he wants to see his team lift the Premier League title next season.
