Man City tipped to ‘splash the cash’ on Aurelien Tchouameni after source reveal – pundit
Noel Whelan has backed midfield sensation Aurelien Tchouameni to be part of a changing of the guard at Man City after Fernandinho announced he will be leaving the club.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Citizens won’t be scared to “splash the cash” to land their top targets this summer.
This site revealed on Thursday (14 April) that Man City have made Monaco star Tchouameni, 22, their number one target this summer to replace the outgoing Fernandinho.
A club source has told Football Insider that Tchouameni is at the top of their wanted list – with the Monegasque club ready to cash in for the right fee.
Fernandinho revealed via Sky Sports (12 April) that it is unlikely he will continue into a tenth season with City.
Whelan insisted Pep Guardiola will want to “have the next crop of players coming through”.
“There’s always going to be a transition,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“The old guard come out and the new guard come in.
“When you get to a certain age, like Fernandinho, you’ve got to change things around. You have to have that next crop of players coming through.
“It doesn’t surprise me. It doesn’t matter what a player like Tchouameni or Declan Rice might go for. I’m sure City won’t be scared to splash the cash on the right player.”
Fernandinho is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Tchouameni, who is out of contract in June 2024, has notched 45 appearances for Monaco this term.
He is an eight-time France international.
