Man United could replace Solskjaer with ‘one of the best’ amid Mbappe claim – pundit

Mauricio Pochettino would “command respect” from the “egos” in the Man United dressing room if he succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 49-year-old is “one of the best” managers in the world.

As reported by the Telegraph (November 13th), Pochettino is “open” to returning to English football and a United source has told Football Insider today the club are monitoring his situation.

The pressure on current boss Solskjaer is ramping up after recent results.

Football Insider exclusively revealed last week (November 10th) that the Norwegian is expected to be sacked by Man United if he does not oversee a revival in the matches immediately after the international break.

Whelan backed the former Tottenham boss to create a “positive environment” at Old Trafford if he is appointed.

“There’s no doubt that he is one of those managers in world football who can command respect,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“What he’s done in the game, who he’s managed and the clubs he’s been at. That all contributes to his status and reputation as one of the best.

“Man United need someone who is able to control the egos at the club, and Pochettino could be that manager.

“They should be looking for a big name and someone who is good with man-management. They need someone who can tame these multi-million-pound players.

“He’s managing Mbappe, Neymar, Messi at PSG and that is one of the most important criteria. He can create that positive environment where everyone is happy, on the pitch and on the bench.

“There are not many managers out there worthy of the Man United job, but he is one of them.”
